Dr. Gregory Curfman’s career as a medical editor at the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) spans 26 years. Currently the executive editor of the Journal, a position he has held for 12 years, Dr. Curfman served as deputy editor for 14 years prior. The NEJM has been published internationally for over 200 years. It includes a wide range of articles and multimedia features across the spectrum of clinical medicine, basic research, health-care policy, and ethics and health law. It has the highest impact factor of any medical journal.

A board-certified internal medicine physician and cardiologist, Dr. Curfman is also an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University and cum laude from Harvard. Dr. Curfman trained in internal medicine and cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston, and he has served as director of the coronary care programs at BWH and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He was also medical director of the Cardiovascular Health Center, a heart disease prevention unit at Mass General.

As the NEJM’s current principal editor for cardiovascular disease, Dr. Curfman also founded and directs Perspective (the lead section of the Journal), which focuses on issues at the interface of medicine and society. The conception and development of this section stands as one of his signature accomplishments. The Perspective section spotlights health policy and health-care reform, as Dr. Curfman has been responsible for publishing several hundreds of articles and multimedia features in the health policy arena. Often covered in the public media, many Perspective articles are also included in the health policy curriculum at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Curfman has written 60 editorials and Perspective articles for the Journal on a variety of topics in medicine and health care, including health policy, health law, and the regulation of drugs and medical devices. He has also given testimony before committees and subcommittees of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives on the regulation and safety of medical devices. As executive editor of the Journal he was tasked with responding to subpoenas and undergoing legal depositions relating to Vioxx product liability litigation. Dr. Curfman communicates frequently with the public media, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Boston Globe.
